It is unarguable that a strong characteristic of a gentleman is a good sense of humor. Fellas, have you ever been out and wondered why that fine ass girl is with “that” guy? Aside from the “gold diggers,” I bet you 9 times out of 10 the lady is with “that” guy because he has a good sense of humor. A good sense of humor is not only works well when it comes to breaking the ice, but also in sustaining any relationship. And this just does not pertain to relationships, but to about every facet of life. But just like anything else, there are rules to this, limitations that cannot be crossed or run the risk of coming off as a straight-up jerk. So to pull one back from the abyss, let’s take a look at some handy guidelines that might come to be of assistance.
Know Your Audience: Having an idea of the type of personalities that you are around is important. For instance, around people that you don’t know that well, certain things might not be funny to some due to points of view, insecurities, etc. So, save your most humorous moments for family and friends, you usually have more wiggle room.
Don’t Be A Prick: Okay, we all know this person, they say whatever is on their mind with no sense of couth, always making a witty remark or observation about someone or something, okay we get it, you’re funny, now fall back with the jokes. Yes, observation is key when it comes to wit, but subtlety is best. Number one rule; do not poke fun at something that someone cannot help. One of the truest virtues of being a gentleman is having the ability of making others feel comfortable with their surroundings, and making fun of someone’s mole that is on the side of their nose does not help matters, not for them, not for others around, and most importantly, not for you. Now fashion, hairstyles, etc. are open season, but know what you are doing, even the funniest line can get you knocked out.
Don’t Be A Comedian: Unless you’re performing at the local Improv or Jokes On Us, save the stand up routine. It can be seen by others that you are only using lines that you came up with in your living room while watching Comedy Central. So if you have aspirations, pursue them, but do it in the proper environment. And piggy backing off of that thought, do not under any circumstances tell riddles, they are for children. So no matter how funny it is, save the knock-knock joke that you heard yesterday evening.
Don’t Laugh At Your Own Jokes: Just don’t do it…
Be Easy: Humorous moments come often, but they are not planned. As mentioned, observation is important, and you can’t do it if you are all over the place trying to do and be everything at once. By just being in tune with your surroundings, irony and wit have a way of coming to you, which makes what you are saying seem more natural, and honestly, funny.
So the next time that you are out, or in, take some of these factors into account. You never know, moments that you think you are being funny, it might be obvious to others that you are being no more than a mere jackass. So save yourself the embarrassment and ridicule, and just enjoy the moment.
